The history of wine making in Cyprus is very old, possibly the oldest wine making country in the world with the production of wine dating back some 6000 years. At the villages of Erimi and Pyrgos in the district of Limassol ancient pots and jugs have been unearthed which were used for wine making (of which some still had grape pips in) which date back between 3500 and 3000 BC.

This cultural heritage of Cyprus wine making triggered the spread of wine making in Greece, Italy, France and other Mediterranean regions.

Cyprus wines are no longer what they were some 15 years ago, shedding off the old belief that kept it nailed to bulk production for markets in the eastern bloc.

In the late 1980's emerged small regional wineries set in the hill villages of the grape growing areas. There are now some 40 regional wineries producing diverse and quality character wines and "Wines from Cyprus" intends to bring you the best of these wines.

Studies indicate that the grape varieties in Cyprus are some of the oldest in the world, while disease decimated vines through Europe in the 1850's these diseases never reached Cyprus.

The foreign varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Semillon have been introduced more recently to blend and complement the indigenous Cyprus varieties like Xynisteri, Mavro and Maratheftiko which now produces quality wines that are quite unique.
